God's Words of Wisdom from the Bible for Tuesday 20 September 2011

"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 20 September 2011"

Today's Bible Verse: 1 John 2:15-17: Do not love the world or the things in the world.  If anyone loves the world , the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world.  And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever."

Do not love the world in verse 15 can be worded to say, "STOP LOVING THE WORLD." John is telling us that we are acting in a way inconsistent in regard to our relationship with Christ.  The World is the morally evil system opposed to all that God is and hold dear.  In this sense, the world is the satanic system opposing Christ's kingdom on this earth.

Though all people are tempted differently according to their individual weakness, temptations follow patterns.  They appeal to three fundamental areas of our life's: (1) the lush of the flesh (physical desires) (2) the lust of the eyes (personal desires) and (3) the pride of life (self-interest).

When Satan caused the fall of the human race, he appealed to each of these areas of weakness Genesis 3:6).  He also appealed to them when he tempted Christ (Matthew 4:1-11).  But Jesus defied Satan's temptations by saying "IT IS WRITTEN" thus relying on Scripture to defeat Satan's temptations and with the defeat "Then the devil left Him..."  We as Christians today should also depend on the Scriptures to defeat temptation.

Given the nature of the "world" in the New Testament, worldliness is not a matter of some list of do's and don'ts.  It is adopting the perspectives (cravings), the values (lust of the eyes), and attitudes (the boosting of status) of man's society rather than the perspective, values, and attitudes of God.   In verse 17 John is telling us that to be consumed with this life is to be unprepared for the next.  What a tragedy to invest our resources in what will not last.

Today's Hymn: "Here I Am To Worship"

Light of the world You stepped down into darkness, opened my eyes to let me see
Beauty that made this heart adore, Hope of a life spent with You
So here I am to worship, Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You're my God, and You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy, Altogether wonderful to me
King of all days, oh highly exalted, glorious in heaven above
Humbly You came to the earth You created, all for loves sake became poor
So her I am to worship, here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You're my God, and You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy, Altogether wonderful to me

Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, may we as Christians always realize that we are living here on this planet which is our temporary home not be caught up and consumed with the material things of this world and focus on You and building up our treasures on heavenly things.  May our words, our life's and our actions always be a light to those who are lost and in need of the Good News of salvation that comes from Jesus Christ.  May we not love the things of this world, but fall in love with the coming of Your Kingdom.
                                                                                                                             Amen
