God's Words of Wisdom

"Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 10 July 2012"

Today's Bible Verse: 1 John 2:15-17 " Do not love the world nor the things in the world, the love of the Father is not in them.  For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lush of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father, but is of the world.  And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the Will of God abides forever."

Do not love the world in verse 15, can be worded to say, "STOP LOVING THE WORLD."
John is telling us that by loving the world, we are acting in a way inconsistent in regard to our relationship with Christ.  The world is a morally evil system opposed to all that God is and holds dear.  In this sense, the world is the static system opposing Christ's kingdom on this earth.

Though all people are tempted differently according to their individual weakness, temptations follow patterns.  They appeal to three fundamental areas of our life's (1) the lust of the flesh (physical desires) (2) the lust of the eyes (personal desires) and (3) the pride of life (self interest).

In Genesis 3:6, we will read that when Satan caused the fall of the human race, he appealed to each of these areas of weakness.  He also appealed to them when he tempted Christ in Matthew 4:1-11.  But Jesus defied Satan's temptations by saying "IT IS WRITTEN" thus relying on Scripture to defeat Satan's temptations and with the defeat "the devil left Him..."  We as Christians today, as we are being assaulted from all fronts, should also use the example that the Lord gave us, and depend on Scripture to defeat temptation.

Given the nature of the "world" in the New Testament, worldliness is not a matter of some list of do's and don'ts.  It is adopting the perspective (cravings), the values (lust of the eyes), and attitudes (the boosting status) of man's society rather than the perspective, values, and attitudes of God.  In verse 17, John is telling us to be consumed with this life is to be unprepared for the next.  What a tragedy to invest all our resources in what will not last.

Today's Biblical Truth: "Eternal Life speaks of both the quality of life in the present, a life filled with the joy of God, and the promise of a future life of living with Christ through all eternity."
